Impersonal finance

I've been using an old, old version of Money for a while. There are things about it that always bother me, like how it fails to categorize the same type of transactions over and over, all sorts of little things are difficult to set up, blah blah blah, so I figured I'd upgrade.

ha. I poked around on Amazon and found that pretty much everyone hates both Money "Plus" and Quicken. Also, apparently Money Plus Deluxe costs $1250. Special offers available, indeed. (Seriously, who would buy it at that price? What, does it come with Suze Orman?)

I guess it'll be mint.com for me.

It always amazes me when there's a serious need in the marketplace and it's completely unmet by the market leader or leaders. It's like they figure we'll give up and go with them if they agree to suck equally.

  1. I happen to LOVE money. I am obsessed with classifying my spending. This could be because I am an accountant or anal retentive. I believe that I am using the 2004 version that I got for $5 off of Amazon. It even does really cool things with my investments. Please….don’t say anything bad about it.

  2. I think the anger is just with the recent versions, for two reasons: one, they really haven't changed much in the last few years (in fact, Microsoft isn't even releasing an updated version of Money this year), and two, both current versions supposedly shut off your online access after two years, so you have to buy a new version to download your statements and such.

    boo to that.

2004 should be fine, especially because you only paid $5 for it.

Uh-oh. I'm using 2007. I guess I really do have to switch soon.

  3. Crap. I'm using 2007 also, because SOMEONE I KNOW told me that I had to upgrade.

  4. Well, that's the thing. In general, you will have to. Very few companies issue updates beyond a certain point, and some time after that, things just stop working.

I've also told you like 500 times that you need internet access at home, and you haven't done that, so I'm clearly not to blame for this. No one can make you do something that you don't want to do.

  5. Hello...internet access at home is a must....I would live without many things before I gave up the internet.

I guess I don't care about updates. I am very happy with 2004.
